Be prepared for a rant...

I hate mainstream music, with a passion... 9/10 the music is rubbish.. and the followers, dude these people listen to 1 Direction and Taylor Swift... So when Birds of Tokyo broke into mainstream, although I was still happy with their music (then) I knew this would mean a huge change in the crowds at their concerts.. I hadn't been to one since before Birds of Tokyo (album) was released in 2010, it was the last tour before it was released, the one after Broken Strings (which I also went to).... Then they changed their style.. I was so angry.. I took to facebook and told them this... Adam is a sell out jerk, just saying.. So last night I went to see them... and I was spot on about the wannabe, flavour of the month crowd... And so the night starts;

It was at Newcastle Panthers, I went with my sister, Jenna.. We walk in the door and you can pick them immediately.. I've been to enough pre-mainstream Birds gigs to know what they used to look like.. The first support band came on, and I thought, hell yeah, these guys are rocking it.. The rest of the crowd however, not impressed... We met a couple of others in the crowd, pushed our way to the front and rocked out to it.. Commenting loudly on the lack of movement.. The second support, same deal.. The death stares and general unfriendliness we were welcomed with in the crowd was disgraceful.. We were up the front in the middle.. Correct me if I'm wrong but in a rock concert (which Birds generally are) this section is the moshpit, we are allowed to jump all over you if we please here... About 4 fights were started..  So anyway... Amazing supports.. The Guppies and Regular John.. If you're interested.

Birds came on... So there was a little bit of enthusiasm, blink and you missed it.. Their set had a good mix... Mostly older stuff, which suited me perfectly since I hate the new stuff... We had This Fire, which I openly yelled at Ian that they sucked and were sell outs... Oh yes he heard me. I jumped around and screamed the lyrics of the other songs.. Earning me a smile and raised eyebrows from Ian... He's still amazing dispute the crap new music he was singing... But the rest of the crowd.. Nothing... This Fire seemed to be the only one they knew... But how hard is it to know that "This Fire" is 90% of the lyrics.. (slight exaggeration)... They played one of the songs off their new album, and I think I hated it more than This Fire... Ian didn't sing much, it was just really long notes you could hardly hear from him... I spent the new songs evaluating... I stood there during this song, and thinking "I have never listened to Birds of Tokyo before now and thought I all I am listening to is noise" ... Also in one of the new ones, could have been the same one, I watched the drummer.. Birds of Tokyo (album) was messed up music wise, in a good way, whacky time signatures and such... So Adam (the drummer) he can drum... For me, what he was doing was hard, I am un co.. But it was hit one drum and then another (I don't know drum set ups so I can't say much more, it may have been floor tom and then one of the top ones) but just on the beat.... THAT WAS IT! no cymbals... I kinda felt sorry for him.. Actually that whole song was like that, Glen was playing one chord of the keyboard on the beat as well... Seriously... I know you can write real music guys...

So all in all, I had fun, I jumped around and did as I usually do, also got some mad shots which will be up later.. Crowd was a disappointment, they all deserved to be slapped.. But I think I wouldn't mind seeing them again... I was caught up in the show to really care what was going on around me.. The lighting was incredible, I guess a mainstream budget can pay off.. Ian's dancing and face pulling always brings a smile to my face and he hasn't even started singing yet.. I miss the old crowds though, they are awesome to be in amongst.. The ones you can sing every song with and dance with.. Statues aren't much fun.. Especially ones with scowls on their faces.
